Maurisun support and encourage “Billfish tag & Release”

Mauritius is an ideal place for deep-sea fishing! The famous 555 Blue Marlin World Cup, which has been an annual event since, supports this statement.

Since there are a lot of predators that come close to Mauritius’ shores in search of food, the range of deep sea fishing experiences in the waters of Mauritius is rather unique: your luck might engage you in the fight of your life with a king-size Blue Marlin or allow you to quietly settle for a 15 kg tuna.

Isn’t that really what big game fishing is all about? Setting out at dawn, whilst totally ignoring what the day’s catch is going to be and docking by sunset at the weighing scales to get your picture taken next to your prize catch as a proof your great success?

Despite the fact that you can venture out fishing all around the island it is the opinion of Maurisun that the best fishing grounds are the ones off the shores of Black River and Le Morne. You will see boats from far up north down there when weather permits.

Maurisun believes that by choosing to collaborate with the best established and experienced fishing companies we can guarantee our clients the best and most personal service. The fact is that the owners of our boats are Big Game fishing enthusiasts themselves, just as their fathers were. The captains too, are descendants from big game fishing captains and therefore our guests can expect a full-hearted effort in getting the catch of your life on all outings.

All boats are fully equipped and rigged up for big game fishing, baits and tackles are provided. Qualified skippers and deckhands run the boats.

Some useful information for fishing around Mauritius:

Fishing Period:

Becume (Wahoo) and Shark - September to December

Espadon (Blue & Sail fish) - November to March

Mako Shark - November to April

Yellow fin Tuna - March to May

Marlin Black, Espadon, Skip jack tuna, Dorado - All year

Coryphènes, Barracudas and other kinds of sharks - All Year

During the winter season if you happen to catch a Marlin it would mostly likely be very large and female. This is due to the fact that the young ones, after having reproduced in summer, take off for the warmer waters off the coast of Madagascar or Kenya whereas the old ones remain in the area.

Best fishing area in Mauritius remains the “Le Morne” peninsula in the south west of the island. This area is even considered to be one of the world’s prime places for Blue and Black Marlin. This for the following reasons:

The current: Two main currents are crossing in this region.

The Plankton: The area is very rich in plankton, the main food of the Sacrechien fish.

The depth: The Sea in this area is very deep and there is an abundance of Sacrechien fish. And the Marlins need these very deep waters to reproduce. The Baby Marlins then feed on Sacrechien eggs and rise to the surface only after they have reached a size of about 40 kg.

The Black River region hosts the famous 555 Marlin World Cup which takes place every year and represents one of the main events of big game fishing worldwide.
